If you’d planned to plant yourself in front of a computer and avail of the awesome discounts on offer during Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale, prepare to be disappointed. Flipkart’s biggest annual sale will only be available to the users of its app.
This is Flipkart’s latest push in driving its users to use its app instead of a desktop or a laptop. The company had earlier considered shutting down its website all together, but had revoked the idea after criticism from several quarters. Flipkart has also been attempting to drive more traffic via its app through other means, including removing some products from its website catalogue.
Flipkart believes that having more users on its app will result in higher engagement and more personalized service. Its subsidiary, Myntra, had shut down its website in May, and had moved to an app-only model.
The Big Billion Day is Flipkart’s premier shopping event, in which the company claims to offer large discounts to its users. The event last year had left many users unhappy with complaints of website crashes and sold out products, following which the founders of the company had issued a public apology.
