Flipkart To Disable Website From September

The days of shopping from Flipkart using your desktop are over. A few months after its subsidiary Myntra announced that it was shutting its website and switching only to an app model, India’s largest e-commerce retailer, Flipkart, has annouced that it will be adopting the same model come September.

The company’s chief product officer Punit Soni informed employees of this development at a town hall meeting last week, reported TOI.

Flipkart says that around 70-75% of its traffic already comes from mobile app, and claims that India is transitioning from a mobile-first to a mobile-only country. An app offers much greater personalization to its users, including features like single-click checkouts and rapid payments through digital wallets.

It may be recalled that Myntra traffic had dropped by 10% in the week immediately following its website shutdown, but the company had hoped to make up for the shortfall with its app. Flipkart has undoubtedly studied the numbers at Myntra, and this move is an indication that Myntra’s experiment with its app-only model is running well.

Flipkart’s major competitor, Amazon, has so far given no indications of following suit and switching to an app only model.
