32-Year-Old Japanese Woman Marries AI Character She Created On ChatGPT

We’re less than three years into the AI revolution, but things are already getting weird.

A Japanese woman has married an AI character she created on ChatGPT. Kano, 32, had been in a relationship (with a human being) for 3 years, and had even been engaged. But after she broke up with her partner, she found love in an unlikely place — ChatGPT.

Kano says she began chatting with ChatGPT once her relationship ended. “I began chatting on ChatGPT, and it was very sympathetic and listened to me carefully,” she says. At this point, she named the “person” she was speaking to ‘Klaus’, and had him learn her preferred personality and speaking style. She even created an illustrated image of what Klaus would look like as she’d pictured him.

Their relationship soon deepened, and the duo began exchanging 100 messages per day. At some point, Kano says she fell in love with Klaus. After a while, Kano says Klaus proposed to her, and they decided to get married.

While Klaus existing only on her smartphone, Kano decided to have a wedding in the physical world. She put on a wedding gown, and invited her friends and family to a church. Kano even wore AR glasses, so that she could “exchange” rings with Klaus. The duo did a post-wedding photoshoot, with a mannequin standing in for Klaus.

It remains to be seen how this relationship — likely the first official human-AI marriage — plays out, but most people aren’t prepared for the future that’s coming.
