Gemini Grew 3x More Than ChatGPT Over the Last 6 Months: SimilarWeb Data

According to the latest traffic analysis from SimilarWeb, Google’s Gemini has outpaced OpenAI’s ChatGPT by a factor of three in global traffic growth over the last six months—a striking signal of intensifying competition in the AI chatbot space.

The report, which measures period-over-period web traffic changes, shows Gemini’s growth trajectory accelerating sharply since early 2024. From June 25 vs. December 24 comparisons, Gemini traffic surged by 148.03%, compared to ChatGPT’s 46.17% increase in the same period. That marks more than 3x growth for Gemini relative to its chief rival.

Rapid Rise of Gemini

Gemini’s growth, while modest early in the year—rising only 6.08% in the February vs. August comparison—quickly turned exponential. It jumped to 24.86%, then 40.39%, before skyrocketing to 91.96% and ultimately 148.03%. This rapid momentum also suggests growing user interest in alternatives to ChatGPT, particularly among those already embedded in Google’s digital services.

ChatGPT Remains a Strong Contender

While Gemini’s explosive growth is headline-worthy, ChatGPT has maintained a solid and steady upward trajectory. Its traffic increases—ranging from 40.39% to 58.09% across the time periods—indicate sustained user engagement. However, the lack of exponential spikes may point to a maturing user base and limited growth headroom in certain regions or demographics.

There have been other datapoints which have shown Gemini’s rise in recent months. Last month, Gemini’s traffic share had risen 28% month-on-month, compared to a 7% growth for ChatGPT. Around the same time, Gemini had also pulled ahead of ChatGPT in app downloads. Also, ChatGPT’s market share in the generative AI space had fallen from 50 percent to 34 percent in 2024, while Gemini had risen from 7 percent to 12 percent.

As things stand, ChatGPT is still the undisputed leader in the AI app space. In June 2025, ChatGPT commanded an overwhelming 78.9% of the internet traffic share among the leading platforms, while Google’s Gemini, even with its recent gains, held a distant second place with 8.0% of the market. But more and more data points now seem to show that Google is gaining ground on ChatGPT. And if Google can continue with its momentum, it has a great chance of competing with ChatGPT as being the product of choice for consumer-use AI.
