OpenAI, Google and Anthropic have hogged the headlines with their foundational models over the last few quarters, but Elon Musk looks set to make his presence felt in the AI race.
Elon Musk has said that Grok 3, his AI company’s upcoming model, is better than any model that’s been released so far. ”Grok 3 has very, very powerful reasoning capabilities. In the tests that we’ve done thus far, Grok 3 is outperforming anything that’s been released that we’re aware of,” he said.
“That’s a good sign. In fact, at times I think Grok 3 is kind of scary smart. You’re like, wow, this thing’s smart. It’s kind of scary. Grok 3 is scary. Tt comes up with solutions that you didn’t even anticipate, you know, not obvious solutions. So Grok 3 was trained with the most amount of compute, and I think very efficiently trained,” he added.
“Also, notably, Grok 3 was trained on a lot of synthetic data. And then it goes back and forth through the data and tries to achieve logical consistency. So, so if it’s got data that is wrong, it’ll actually reflect upon that and remove the data that is wrong, (the data) that not concord with reality,” Musk said.
“So, its base reasoning is very good. Even without fine tuning, Grok 3, the base model, is better than Grok 2. So we’re really in the final stages of polishing Grok 3. Probably it gets released in a a week or two. Pretty soon,” he added.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Grok 3 does turn out to be a very capable model. Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has built the largest cluster of GPUs anywhere in the world. Its cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, has 200,000 NVIDIA GPUs, and was built in a record time of just 19 days. Musk had also hired some top names for xAI, and they’ve been using this giant cluster to train their AI models. They’ve produced some good results so far — Grok’s AI image generating model is quite capable, and its text model doesn’t have some of the biases of the models built by other AI labs. And with Musk going out and publicly saying that Grok 3 will be better than any publicly-released model, it appears that xAI is set to make its play towards becoming one of the top AI labs in the world.
