The Engineer Who Changed How the World Communicates

Raymond Samuel Tomlinson was born on April 23, 1941, in Amsterdam, New York, and grew up in the small, unincorporated village of Vail Mills. He earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering before going on to complete a master’s degree in the same field at MIT. Two years after graduating, he joined the technology and research firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) — a company that had already been awarded the contract to build ARPANET, the U.S. government’s pioneering computer network and the direct precursor to the modern internet.

It was at BBN that Tomlinson would make his mark on history. In 1971, he was working on ARPANET and became fascinated by a specific limitation of the network: users could leave messages for one another on the same computer, but there was no way to send a message to someone on a different machine. “I had written a couple of programs to transfer files,” Tomlinson later recalled, “and it occurred to me that since the mailbox that I was sending these messages to was nothing more than a file, I could send that file across the network instead of keeping it within the same machine. And so I put two programs together, modify the code a little bit.”

When Tomlinson demonstrated the system to a colleague at BBN, his reaction was not triumphant. “Don’t tell anyone!” he reportedly said. “This isn’t what we’re supposed to be working on.” The development of email had not been assigned to him by his employer; he had simply been, in his own words, “looking for something to do.”

The first email Tomlinson sent was transmitted in late 1971 between two PDP-10 computers sitting side by side in the same room at BBN’s Cambridge laboratory. The content of the message was never preserved. When asked about it decades later, Tomlinson could only guess that it was likely “QWERTYUIOP” — the top row of the keyboard — or a similar test string. “The test messages were entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them,” he said. A Symbol With a 500-Year History

What makes the story of the @ symbol even more remarkable is that, while Tomlinson rescued it from near-obscurity in 1971, the character itself is far older than computers. Its origins are a matter of some scholarly debate, but the earliest documented use dates to May 4, 1536, in a letter written by a Florentine merchant named Francesco Lapi. Writing from Seville to Rome, Lapi used the symbol as shorthand for “amphora” — a traditional clay jar used to measure wine — noting the price of a quantity of wine in Peru.

The discovery of this document was made in 2000 by professor Giorgio Stabile of La Sapienza University in Rome, who traced the looping script around the letter “a” to merchant writing styles common in Florence during the Renaissance. From Italy, the symbol spread along trade routes throughout Europe, where merchants adopted it to mean “at the rate of” — a usage still seen today in pricing notation such as “10 items @ $5.”

Some scholars posit an even older origin: that medieval monks created the symbol as a shorthand for the Latin word “ad,” meaning “toward,” by combining the letter “a” with a stylized “d” — much in the same way the ampersand (&) evolved from the Latin “et.” Whatever its precise origin, by the time typewriters arrived in the 19th century, the @ symbol had been incorporated into keyboards as a commercial notation, even though most typists rarely had occasion to use it.

It was precisely this obscurity that made it attractive to Tomlinson. A character that nobody was using was the perfect choice for a new purpose.

Tomlinson remained at BBN — later acquired by Raytheon — for his entire career, serving as a principal scientist until his death. He was, by all accounts, a modest man who was somewhat bemused by the scale of what he had created. A company spokesman described him as “humble and modest,” and journalist Adrienne LaFrance of The Atlantic called him a “self-professed Luddite” who did not own a mobile phone and had only recently joined Facebook.

The broader world gradually caught up to the significance of his invention. In 2010, the Museum of Modern Art in New York made the extraordinary decision to acquire the @ symbol for its architecture and design collection — crediting Tomlinson — describing the decision as recognition of a “defining symbol of the computer age” and an act of “extraordinary elegance and economy.” In 2012, he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame by the Internet Society. The Internet Hall of Fame noted that his email program “brought about a complete revolution, fundamentally changing the way people communicate.”

He is also credited with the invention of the TCP three-way handshake — the foundational protocol that underlies HTTP and much of the modern internet. The Boston Globe ranked him number four on its list of the top 150 MIT-related ideas, inventions, and innovators of all time.

Ray Tomlinson died of a heart attack on March 5, 2016, at his home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, at the age of 74. News of his passing drew tributes from across the technology world, including from Vint Cerf, co-developer of the TCP/IP protocol. In 2022, April 23 — Tomlinson’s birthday — was officially designated as national Email Day in his honor.
