Ayan Mukerji, Chief Executive of Wipro’s Media and Telecom Strategic Business Unit has quit after a 28-year stint with the company. Ayan, who joined Wipro as a management graduate from IIM, Calcutta in 1987, had played a significant role in the company in growing its various businesses across geographies. Ayan was based out of Mountain View, California.
During his tenure, Ayan held a wide range of leadership positions across IT, Product Engineering and Systems Integration businesses. As the Chief Sales and Operations Officer for Europe until March 2010, he transformed Europe into one of Wipro’s fastest growing regions significantly ahead of competition. Ayan was instrumental in expanding Wipro’s customer base in France, Germany and the Nordics in particular. Earlier, as Head of Sales for Product Engineering Services business at North America for seven years, he drove Wipro’s exponential growth in the technology business, making it the largest Product R&D services provider in the world.
Ayan is the second executive to leave Wipro after the chief business operations officer S. Doreswamy resigned in March following Wipro’s biggest management reshuffle in four years, which included the appointment of a former Tata Consultancy Services Ltd executive Abid Ali Neemuchwala as Chief Operating Officer.
Following Ayan’s exit, Wipro has restructured its global media and telecommunications unit. The company said it had carved out a separate vertical for Communication Services Providers – one of the largest verticals across businesses and among the most geographically dispersed – and placed veteran Anil Jain in charge of that business. Jain will report to COO Neemuchwala.
The tenure of Wipro’s CEO T.K. Kurien is also ending in January next year.
