Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had earlier said that 90% of the code at his company was now being written by AI, and he’s now said that some employees have stopped writing code altogether — they just edit code generated by AI.
In a recent interview, Amodei drew parallels between the current AI revolution and Moore’s Law, suggesting that AI capabilities are following a similar exponential trajectory. His comments offer a rare glimpse into how one of the world’s leading AI companies is itself being transformed by the technology it creates, with developers fundamentally changing how they work.

“There’s just an exponential, just like we had an exponential with Moore’s Law, chips getting faster and faster until they could do any simple calculation faster than any human,” Amodei explained. “I think the models are just going to get more and more capable at everything.”
The Anthropic chief pointed to the rapid pace of improvement in AI models as evidence of this trend. “Every few months we release a new model. Gets better at coding, it gets better at science. Now models are routinely winning high school math Olympiads, are moving on to college math Olympiads, are starting to do new mathematics for the first time,” he said.
Then came the striking revelation about internal practices at Anthropic. “I’ve had internal people at Anthropic say, I don’t write any code anymore. I don’t open up an editor and write code. I just let Claude Code write the first draft and all I do is edit it,” Amodei stated. “We had never reached that point before.”
He emphasized that this is just the beginning of a sustained transformation. “The drumbeat is just going to continue. I don’t think there’s any privilege point. There’s no point at which the models start to do something different. What we’re going to see in the future is just like we’ve been seen in the past, except more so. The models are just going to get more and more intellectually capable. And the revenue is going to keep adding zeros.”
Amodei should know what he’s talking about — Anthropic’s AI models are the most popular in the world for coding, and the company is also ahead of both OpenAI and Google in enterprise API use. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta have similarly reported that substantial portions of their code are now AI-generated or AI-assisted. The transformation from AI as a helpful tool to AI as the primary author—with humans serving as editors and reviewers—represents a fundamental reimagining of software development. If this trend continues as Amodei predicts, the role of software engineer may evolve into something closer to an editor, architect, or quality controller, focused on high-level design decisions and verification rather than the granular work of writing individual functions and classes.
