I Put Story Ideas Into DeepSeek And It Produced Better Writing Than Mine: Three Body Problem Author Cixin Liu

AI is getting so good at creative tasks that even celebrated professionals now think that it can do a better job than them.

Cixin Liu , the Chinese science-fiction writer whose book Three Body Problem was adapted into a popular show by Netflix, has said that DeepSeek is now able to write better than he does. “I have input some of my own story ideas into models like DeepSeek and, honestly, the writing it produced was smoother and more fluent than mine. That does take some of the joy out of creating literature,” he said in an interview to South China Morning post.

“In earlier science fiction, AI was supposed to do menial, repetitive labour, freeing humans to pursue poetry and dreams. Now it is the opposite – AI is moving into our most “high level” fields: literature, technology and the law. Meanwhile, we are still the ones sweeping floors and washing dishes. That is something even science fiction did not foresee,” Liu added.

Cixin also added that LLMs could be more similar to humans than people realize. “At literary events in China, many veteran writers comfort themselves by saying, “AI does not have a soul, inspiration, or lived experience.” I used to agree with their opinions, until one day I realized that human thought and creativity are also based on data, like our memories and experiences. Without those, we could not reason or write either. So, the difference between the human brain and a large language model is not as vast as we would like to believe. The brain does not follow any special natural law. Therefore, I think it is entirely possible for AI to surpass us,” he said.

Cixin Liu isn’t the only writer who believes that AI is getting real close to their ability at creative tasks. Legendary screenwriter Paul Schrader, best known for his work on movies like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), had said early this year that he was stunned by how good AI had become. He’d said that ChatGPT was giving him better suggestions to improve a script than any industry executive had given him over his career.

AI is already being heavily used in video production. Amazon Prime’s House of David had used AI for some of its scenes, while Netflix has also used AI to generate a scene in an Argentinian show. Meanwhile, an Indian movie from 2013 was re-released in 2025 with an alternate ending generated by AI, and OpenAI is planning to make an entire animated film named ‘Critterz’ with AI. It remains to be seen how AI use progresses in creative fields, but with some of the most noted authors now saying that it can do a comparable job to them, it could soon lead to an explosion of new content in the coming years.
