The Modi government’s decision to withdraw Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes with immediate effect has caught everyone off guard. As the internet is currently in meltdown at perhaps the biggest announcement in recent memory, Paytm cashed in on the hysteria. As people raved about the goverment’s decision, Paytm had a simple message for its fans.
We have got two words for you: Paytm Karo.
— Paytm (@Paytm) November 8, 2016
The tweet has gone viral, and currently has over a thousand RTs in less than half of hour of being posted. Paytm has a right to be delighted at the news – as the country’s largest digital wallet, it stands to gain the most if people switch from using paper currency to digital money. And with the Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes being canceled, there exists an even bigger use case for Paytm – instead of people lugging around large stacks of Rs. 100 notes, they’d rather prefer to just transfer money digitally.
And it’s not just Paytm – the government’s announcement should be music to the ears of digital wallets across the country. Their products have just become exponentially more useful overnight, and with the government taking a stand as firm as this in favour of digitization, they can hope for more support from regulatory authorities.
This government is serious about reform – and it has put its money where its mouth is in the best way possible.
