Indian startups have been eyeing foreign markets for a while now, but some of the country’s most celebrated brands are also looking to step outside Indian shores.
Amul will launch its milk products in the US next week. Amul Taaza, Amul Gold, Amul Shakti and Amul Slim n Trim milk brands will be available for US customers. This is the first time that Amul products will be sold outside India.
“We have been exporting dairy products for many decades. This is the first time we are launching fresh milk outside India,” GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) MD Jayen Mehta said.
Amul has tied up with 108-year old cooperative organization Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) in the US to sell its products. The milk collection and processing will be done by MMPA, while Amul will do marketing and branding of Amul fresh milk. The recipe will be Amul’s.
Amul says its milk brands will be available in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Washington, Dallas and Texas among other locations. Amul will initially target the Indian diaspora which will likely have a brand association with the product. Amul plans to also launch fresh milk products like paneer, curd and butter milk in the near future.
Amul is already a juggernaut in the global dairy space. The company, which is a cooperative that works directly with farmers, is currently the 8th largest dairy company in the world. Just last month, PM Narendra Modi had inaugurated five projects worth Rs. 1,200 crore at the Golden Jubilee celebration of GCMMF, and said that the company should make efforts towards becoming the world’s number 1 dairy company. And with Amul now launching its products in the US, it might be taking the first steps towards getting there.
