Google Preparing To Release A Flash Model Named Gemini 4 Hydrogen, X Users Say

Google is reportedly gearing up to release a new addition to its Gemini 4 family, and if the chatter on X this week is to be believed, it’s a Flash-tier model codenamed Hydrogen.

Multiple accounts that track AI model leaks have independently posted about Gemini 4 Hydrogen over the past several days, describing it as a lighter, faster sibling to Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 4 Carbon, the two frontier models Google has already shipped in the Gemini 4 line this year. Where Argon was Google’s return to the frontier and Carbon its current flagship, Hydrogen looks to be the new iteration aimed squarely at speed and cost rather than raw intelligence.

What X Users Are Saying

On 27th October, X user Pankaj Kumar said that Gemini 4 Flash would be called “Hydrogen”. “Gemini 4 Flash leaks: codenamed “Hydrogen” – Gemini 4 Flash is in internal testing under the codename Hydrogen. – It maybe also routing in Antigravity. There’s a model ID, gemini-3.8-flash-router, which can be related to Gemini 4 Flash,” he said.

By the following week, multiple posters were reporting that five separate Hydrogen checkpoints had surfaced, with speeds reportedly reaching 300 to 500 tokens per second, and that the model was being A/B tested on both Google AI Studio and LMArena. An account put together a short video claiming the same testing activity, while still flagging the figures as unconfirmed by Google.

X user Chetaslua, who often tests out AI models before their release, went a step further and posted side-by-side image comparisons said to be generated across the different Hydrogen checkpoints, showing illustrations of bicycles, a lighthouse, and a game controller rendered in slightly different styles, and asked followers to weigh in on which checkpoint looked best.

Other posts offered early impressions of Carbon rather than Hydrogen, noting that Carbon is faster than Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, that its Three.js output is impressive even if Claude still has an edge there, and that its 3D generation stands out for color and design. That post speculated about a broader Gemini upgrade arriving around mid-November alongside rumored updates to Astra and Fable, suggesting Hydrogen could be part of a wider refresh rather than a standalone release.

Where This Fits In Google’s Gemini 4 Lineup

Google has been moving quickly through the Gemini 4 generation. Argon came first, launching to cyber defenders before opening up more broadly to Pro and Ultra subscribers. Carbon followed roughly four weeks later as a considerably stronger flagship, topping the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index ahead of GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5, and has gone on to post the top score on Vending-Bench 2 and first place on Text Arena.

Hydrogen, if the leaks hold up, would be the third model in the family and the first at the Flash tier, which Google typically positions as its cheaper, lower-latency option rather than a benchmark leader. None of the claims around checkpoint count, token speeds, or testing venues have been confirmed by Google itself, and nothing in the leaked posts points to a firm release date. Still, with Argon and Carbon both landing in quick succession over the past month, a Hydrogen launch in a similar window wouldn’t be out of step with how Google has been shipping this generation of Gemini models.
